What to Not Feed Your Flock

Chickens will pretty much anything and are relatively smart on what they shouldn't eat. But i compiled a list together of things that shouldn't be given to your flock.

  • Avocado skin or the pit - It can contain a compound called persin which is toxic to birds.
  • Raw potatoes (Green potatoes or peels) Potatoes that aren't ripe can contain solanine and chaconine which are toxins. It can cause drowsiness, paralysis, and in some cases death.
  • Anything that is rotting or moldy. If you are fermenting your feed and it turns moldy, pour it out and restart it.
  • Green Tomatoes and the Tomato plants - the vegetable is fine but not the plant itself.
  • Chocolate - This is said to be toxic to chickens
  • Apple seeds - The apple itself is totally fine but the seeds can contain cyanide which can deliver a potentially fatal dose of poison to your chickens.
  • Random mushrooms that grow in your garden. Just add those to your compost!
  • Raw meat - while some will let their flock finish off a deer after butchering and cleaning the valuable meat. There is still the risk of salmonella and other bacteria.
  • Rhubarb and the Rhubarb leaf - This contains anthraquinones, which can have a laxative effect on your flock.
  • Caffeine - Drinks like coffee or soda that have caffeine can be toxic to birds as it will increase their heart rate, induce arrhythmias and hyperactivity, and even cause cardiac arrest. This does NOT include the coffee bedding. This is only for coffee that HAS NOT been filtered to the point that the caffeine has been removed.
